HOARDING DISORDER: From Clutter to Chaos; Assessment, Diagnosis, Intervention and Treatment

Hoarding Disorder is a complex mental health condition recognized as a distinct psychiatric disorder. Individuals with this disorder have a pathological attachment to their possessions, which is often more important to them than human relationships.

This is an introductory / intermediate level workshop .

9:00 am - 12:00 pm Morning Session: Part I Hoarding Behavior: From Clutter to Chaos This introductory/intermediate level workshop on hoarding will address the DSM-V criteria for a diagnosis of hoarding disorder; what and why people hoard, and the distress that is caused by compulsive hoarding. Consideration will be given to balancing the individual's right to self-determination with concern for public health and safety. Lecture includes case vignettes for discussion.

Participants completing this morning program should be able to:

1) Identify criteria for diagnosing Hoarding Disorder (HD)

2) Describe informational processing deficits experienced by people with HD

3) Specify ways HD impacts psychosocial functioning

12:00 noon- 1:00 pm Light Lunch provided and Networking

1:00 pm - 4 pm Afternoon Session: Part II Hoarding Disorder: Diagnosis, Assessment, Treatment and Intervention Program runs from 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm. This intermediate level workshop on hoarding will enable participants to assess and develop an expanded plan of care with clients in a hoarding situation, through review of diagnostic criteria, research based evidence, use of standardized assessment and evaluation tools and case presentation. A strength-based perspective is discussed to uphold client dignity, autonomy and sense of self. Participants will explore the different levels of severity of hoarding conditions to identify situations of imminent risk, and to collaborate with the hoarding individual on building a harm reduction treatment plan with clear, measurable and time limited goals.

Participants completing this afternoon program should be able to:

1) Identify factors of imminent risk that may prompt immediate, crisis intervention.

2) Define the strategy and goals of a Harm Reduction Approach

3) Recognize therapeutic intervention therapies/approaches used by clinicians for treating Hoarding Disorder

About the Instructor:

Anne B. Pagano, LCSW, ACSW, BCD, C-ASWCM, is the Executive Director of the Hoarding Disorder Resource and Training Group, Inc. She has over 30 years' experience in direct clinical services, supervision, administration and education in hospitals and long term care facilities. She holds a Master's in Social Work from Simmons College of Social Work in Boston and a Post-Master's Certificate in Gerontology from the Hunter-Brookdale Center on Aging in New York City.
